Abstract Background

Guandao 關刀

Associated with the legendary General Guan Yu, the Guandao 關刀 is one of the most iconic weapons in Chinese martial tradition. Though rarely used in actual combat, it became a symbol of strength, with extremely heavy versions used in military exams to test the power and endurance of elite soldiers. Today, it remains a respected training tool for developing fluid strength, body control, and martial presence—as well as an emblematic display weapon.

Santösh Weapons can craft any style, blade shape, or dragon head engraving you envision. Contact craftsman David Santösh for a free quote and to explore the wide range of possibilities. Together, we can create a unique piece that serves both as a solid training weapon and a beautiful display of martial artistry. All joints are precisely and solidly fitted, with rounded edges and laminated tips for maximum impact resistance.

The example shown in the photos on this page features bloodwood blades paired with a purpleheart pole. The dragon head is actually a Yutyrannus—a Chinese cousin of the T. Rex—custom-designed at the request of a client who is both a professional paleontologist and an enthusiastic martial artist. This piece is a great example of the wide range of possibilities available. You can choose from any of the wood types listed below, and you're welcome to submit your own blade shape or engraving designs to create a weapon that's truly your own.
